Movie clips for this term's talks
I've been doing some thinking and looking through my notes. Some ideas for movie clips for proposed topics...
Clubbing
- Human Traffic is basically all about Club culture
- I've not watched it, but It's all gone Pete Tong might be worth watching
- Kevin & Perry Go Large
- Video for Kai Tracid - Too Many Times
- South West 9 and Sorted - never seen them or heard of them
Rivalry
- Shrek 2 - the bit where Shrek meets the king (Fiona's father). They both try to outdo each other.
The future
- Bruce Almighty - Christianity Today did a write up on 'ignoring the signs'
Booze
- The start of Dude where's my car
- Cocktail??
Consumerism
- Holy man - this film explorers consumerism and spirituality etc.
- The Grinch - at the start of the film there is a mad frenzy to buy Christmas gifts...as if that's the whole point of it.
- The monologue at the start of Trainspotting
- Fight Club - the bit where the Narrator is talking about his living room - it reads like a catalogue
Body image
- Big fish - during the film Ed comes across a really tall guy called Karl. He only seems to fit in when he joins all the other so called misfits in the circus
- Spanglish - I blogged about this here
- Austin Powers Gold Member - there is a talk in Videos that teach 3
- Elf - in Lapland, he doesn't fit in...he's three times bigger than everyone else...
- Bend it Like Beckham - 16 - 18 mins into the film Jess refuses to play football because everyone will see the scars on her legs
- The Full Monty - there is a scene about 55 mins into the film where Mark hides in the shed and covers himself in cling film...he is worried about how he looks
Popularity
- Big fish - Ed Bloom is probably one of the most popular guys you'll ever come across. He is good at everything. If there is a clip in this, it's somewhere near the start of the film.
- Mr Deeds - Longfellow Deeds is loved by everyone...
Gossip
- A have a film called Gossip on my shelf...I must get around to watching it
Drugs
Self control
- The Incredibles - Mr Incredible and his family is forced to live a 'normal' life. This causes no end of frustrations for him and requires a great deal of self control
- Die Another Day - at the start of the film Bond is tortured and refuses to cave in under pressure
Teenage pregnancy
- Fifteen and Pregnant - got the DVD, but never watched it
- The Cider House Rules?
Love / relationships / affairs / break-ups etc.
- Love Actually - I noticed a plug to www.popculturechurch.com on the youthwork.co.uk forum. There's some ideas on how to use the movie here
- The film Sliding Doors is all about a relationship that goes wrong when James, Helens boyfriend is caught having an affair
- Love Actualy - two possibilities
- Jamie (Colin Firth) catches his girlfriend in the act (more or less)
- Harry (Alan Rickman) toys with the idea of having an affair
- Kevin and Perry Go Large - if I remember correctly, I think that Kevin gets the hump because Perry's gets off with 'his girl'. I need to check that out.
