Envy
Envy is a great film on the topic of...Envy, forgiveness, jealousy, friendship...etc.
This film is about two friends, Tim Dingman (Ben Stiller) and Nick Vanderpark (Jack Black). At the start of the film they both work for the same office doing the same sort of job...equals. However, Nick comes up with this invention that makes dog poo disappear. This turns him into an overnight success and millionaire. As far as Nick is concerned, nothing has changed in their friendship...they are still mates, they still next door, however Nick's success brews jealousy and envy in Tim.
Here are some DVD scenes of interest:

Here are some DVD scenes of interest:
- Scenes 3 - 9 (6 mins 50 to 27 mins). In these scenes, Nick comes up with the invention and the jealousy brews. It finishes when Tim gets fired.
- Scenes 10 - 14 (27 mins to 45 mins 30). In his jealously, Tim accidentally kills Nicks beloved horse. A good introduction for talking about friendship...what the worst thing you have done to a friend? Do you tell you friends everything? Do you forgive your friends? You could show this then show scene 26 later when Tim confesses
- Scenes 25 - 26 (1 hour 19 mins 30 to 1 hour 25 mins 40 sec). Tim confesses...Nick forgives him.

Mr & Mrs Smith
Watched Mr & Mrs Smith on Friday night. An entertaining film that mostly about deception. It becomes clear in the first half hour of the film that while John and Jane are married, they really don't know each other at all. There are several scenes that demonstrate this...also there are some scenes with Eddie that demonstrate a distrust of women that come out of relationship problems. A good example is when John comes to tell Eddie that his wife is a spy. Rather than comfort him, he lists a whole load of things that she was probably up to...

Old Christmas talk update
I updated this talk I did on What does Christmas mean to you? I've not tried it, but I found the Chav style Christmas story on youthblog here.
We're kind of winding down for Christmas, just a few more events to do: a meal, a theatre trip and a home group...looking forward to the break....

The Interpreter
Watched The Interpreter last week. It stars Nicole Kidman, who plays Silvia Broome and Sean Penn who plays Tobin Keller. Anyway, the story revolves around an attempt to assassinate some dictator at the UN in New York. Silvia knows something about it...we discover that her brother was murdered. Anyway, she tells this story about justice...in her home country what would happen is that the person convicted of the murder would be tied up and thrown in the river to drown. The family of the victim would have to choose whether to save them from drowning or not. She says something like: the family has to choose on whether to save them and move on, or get revenge and live with that grief all their lives. Very interesting in a Christian context. The clip I'd use is around 41 mins (he prints out a picture of a crown he's been emailed) to 46 mins (she leaves the room saying "that was a long time ago").
