Fear...
I've been thinking about doing a session on fear / worry as a follow up to my post on What are you worried about?. Here are some ideas:
http://www.childline.org.uk/Examstress.asp
Quiz / game
- Phobia quiz. See http://www.phobialist.com/
- Signs - there is a scene about half way through the film where the alien is captured on a video. There are loads of kids there and the scream and panic...
- If I remember correctly, at the start of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Indy falls in the a pit of snakes...which is where he get's his fear of snakes from
- http://www.bbc.co.uk/videonation/category/fears/ has a load of different video clips about different peoples fears...
Bible bits
- Matthew 8:25-27 Jesus commands the wind and sea
- Matthew 10:27-29 (TM)"Don't be bluffed into silence by the threats of bullies. There's nothing they can do to your soul, your core being. Save your fear for God, who holds your entire life--body and soul--in his hands."
- Hebrews 13:5-7 (CEV) "Don't fall in love with money. Be satisfied with what you have. The Lord has promised that he will not leave us or desert us. 6That should make you feel like saying, "The Lord helps me! Why should I be afraid of what people can do to me?" "
- John 14:27 "I give you peace, the kind of peace that only I can give. It isn't like the peace that this world can give. So don't be worried or afraid."
- Psalm 56:3 "When I am afraid, I will trust in you"

101 things to do before you die
I saw this book at the Galleria today called 101 things to do before you die. Sounds like an interesting topic to explore from a spiritual point of view...I wonder what our young people would say?
[Update: There is also a book called 2DO before I die. I've got them on order]

Just Like Heaven
In in Houston Texas this week. I watched Just Like Heaven on flight over. It's a romantic comedy with the usual twists and turns. The film itself is fairly straight forward...workaholic doctor (has no social life etc) is working hard, doing a good job is involved in a serious car accident...it then goes on to explore issues such as: the after life, euthanasia, the 'spirit world', fate, what's life really about etc.
The first 17 minutes could be used as an introduction to the afterlife (although it not really that - you need to watch the film). It could also be used to challenge people on how they use there time...the clock is ticking...are you using your time wisely? You could be killed in a car accident....
If you extend the clip to cover the first 23ish minutes it kind of gets more into the afterlife experience...Ghosts etc. You could stop it just after she runs out of the window saying 'I'm not leaving'. The euthanasia bit is near the end of the film.

Self defence workshop
We did our self defence workshop on Tuesday, it worked well. A local guy called Julian came and did it. He basically showed the girls how, with a few simple movements you could either avoid an attacker or you could distract them long enough to run away...you could do this with out having to learn some complicated moves that you'd never remember. I'd like to invite him back for a second session some time later this term.
We did this as a follow up to the talk on night clubbing which you can find here.

Little Nicky - Heaven and Hell?
I watched Little Nicky the other day. Not sure I liked it...it wasn't as funny as Sandlers usual films and of course it's not exactly a source of theological inspiration. However, I did think that the opening scenes, that is scenes 1 & 2 would make a fairly good introduction to a discussion on 'hell', what it is, or isn't and how you get there. Basically at the start of this film some guy has climbed a tree so he can watch some woman get undressed. He falls out of the tree and keeps falling into...hell. It then paints a pictures outlining what hell is like. I'd be interested to hear anybody else's thoughts on this film...could it be used or not?

Respect talk
Last night we talk on the subject of respect. I've uploaded it here. We used the mpeg video from http://talkingdonkey.sitesled.com/keystage4/updates/respect/respectvideo.htm
Note that if you don't have access to a PC / video projector, you can use a DVD player - most DVD players will play MPEG1 movies. The keyword seems to be VCD. SVCD is for MPEG2's. For it says either of those words you can probably cut a CD and play it on the DVD player.

Prayer collage
He're an updated version of the prayer collage talk we did last week at Pathfinders. A useful tip I discovered: if you want to get hold of old newspapers (from the last few weeks) in a hurry, call at your library - they will probably give you their old newspapers. They were very helpful to me!

Dodge Ball
Dodge ball is a film about two rival gyms. One is owned by the token "bad guy", White Goodman, and the other by the "good guy", Peter La Fleur. The "bad guy" is trying to close down the "good guys" gym...the only way they can be saved is by raising 50k to pay off their debts. Anyway, they come up with this idea to win the 50k prize for this dodge ball competition. There are lots of scenes in this film that could be used in a discussion, here are some specifics:

- Scene 1 (from the start - 1 min 50 sec) - you could use this scene to explore different ideas about body image. It's an advert for White Goodman's gym and is full of slim "pretty people"
- Scene 8 (21 min - 23 min 40 sec) - in this scene they are watching some old film that explains dodge ball rules. It has some good non politically correct quotes. For example, when picking your team the advice is "remember to pick the bigger stronger kids...". You could use this to look at popularity etc.
- This involves four scenes...scene 9 (25 min 21 sec - 28 min 40 sec) then skip ahead to scenes 11-13 (33 min - 38 min 10 sec). The team play their first dodge ball game and it's fair to say that they are rubbish. A veteran player, Patches, offers to coach them. Basically he shows them the ropes and the "disciplines" of the sport. You could use this to talk about spiritual disciplines...draw some parallels.

Mental health time bomb?
Some stats from www.youthwork.co.uk ...
"Key common factors including drink and drug abuse, sexual promiscuity, self-harm and bullying are leading towards a generation of dysfunctional adults.
- 72% of 14-year-olds have drunk alcohol
- 36% of 15-year-olds have tried cannabis or cocaine
- 32% of 15-year-olds have had sex
- One in four young girls aged 15 have considered suicide or have self-harmed"
Maybe we should look at this issue...?
