Gospel leaflet - from label of love
I've just found this leaflet entitled "knowing God" on the http://www.labeloflove.org/ website (project based in Hull area). It sums up the gospel message quite well...

I'm back
I'm back from our Youth weekend we lead for Pickering Methodist Church. I'm going to be uploading some of the material we used during the weekend, but for now have a look at this info I put together for one of the sessions: http://www.pickeringyouth.co.uk/. I'll be uploading a PDF later this week for the 'leaflet' version of the same info.

The Longest Yard - talk ideas
In The Longest Yard Adam Sandler plays Paul Crewe, an American football player who 'threw a game' for money. While he was a great footballer, this ruined in carrier. During the start of the film he gets into some trouble and ends up in prison where he is forced into running a football team. There are loads of issues raised in this film:
- Scene 1 & 2 (first 8 mins) - consequences / selfishness. At the start of the film, Lena, his girlfriend is hosting a party. Paul can't be bothered to take part...he just wants to watch football. He ends up locking her in the closet and stealing her car (he's been drinking). Anyway, it turns into a car chase...he gets arrested...consequences.
- Scene 3 (8 mins - 14 mins) - blackmail / bullying / dilemmas. Paul arrives at the prison and is "welcomed" by Captain Knauer, who gives him a beating and tells Paul that he should not take up any offer by the warden to get involved in the prison football team. So when the warden meets Paul, he asks him to help and he declines...so he gets threatened by the warden...he is stuck in the middle...what to do...
- Scene 8 (33 mins 44 - 38 mins 30) - Matthew 5:38:45 / Turn the other cheek. Paul tries to recruit the basket ball players...so he challenges the "leader" to a game of one on one. While Paul plays fair he takes a beating because the other guy cheets. You could probably use this as a good example of "turn the other cheek"
- Scene 9 (40 mins - 43 mins) - saying sorry. They are playing football and this big scary guy decks some other guy in the team. Paul makes the big guy say sorry.
- Scene 10 (45 min - 47 mins 20) - more bullying. The prison officers corner this guy in the library and try provoke him into doing something...he doesn't react.
- Scene 15 - scene 17 - the big game / cheating / confession etc. Some highlights include:
- the referee is not playing far...he is biased in favour of the prison guards...anyway, the inmates come up with a way to make him play fair
- in scene 17 (1 hour 30ish) Paul confesses that he did throw that game, and confesses that he's been threatened by the warden so that he does that same again....this time he's going to make the right choice, even if it costs him

Rules for life - I, Robot
I did the talk on Rules for life tonight. You can find it here. Note that while I ended up using different clips and questions, I got the idea for I, Robot from Video's that teach 4.

Rules for your life...
I just been looking through Video's that teach 4 and there appears to be a talk using I, Robot based on the 10 commandments. I rekon we could use that as the starting point for the proposed talk Rules for Life

Match Stick Men
Match Stick Men - two movie clips on the topic of deception
Technorati tags: youth work, youth ministry, youth talks, youth ministry resources
- Near the start of the movie Roy and Frank pressurise a woman to make a purchase on the phone...if she signs up now...etc...it will be sent to them via their courier, but of course never arrives. Later Roy and Frank go around to the woman's house, this time pretending to be the police, get her bank details. They then take all her money...which even Roy feels a bit bad about.
- A little further on in the film, Roy shows his 14 year old daughter, Angela, how to pull a scam with a lottery ticket...this raises some interesting moral dilemmas etc.

Wedding Crashers
I just watched Wedding Crashers again whilst looking for a clip on relationships. Anyway here are some ideas:
- Scene 2 - lies, seduction, womanising, sex. John and Jeremy get themselves into different weddings by pretending to be relatives. They do this, mainly to get the ladies. Even John starts to realise how shallow he is. He's in bed with this woman and says "I feel like I don't even know you". Note there's a bit of top-half only nudity at the end of this clip.
- Scene 3 - self-control. Whilst the bride and groom are taking their vows, which they wrote themselves, the bridesmaid can't stop laughing.
- Scene 18 - how low will you go? Chazz crashes a funeral...the pretend to be mourns so they can get the women.
- Scene 19 - making up. John turns up to Jeremy's wedding...they make up.

How did they die - a quiz
Here's a quiz entitled "How did they die" that we did a couple of weeks ago. It seemed to work ok, apart from no one had watched Forest Gump or Ghost.
