Risk assessment for residential
We've been working on a risk assessment for a YFC event that kicks off on the 9th June. Those of you who have had to do these before will know that it's useful to solicit other peoples ideas as they might think of something you haven't. Anyway, I thought I'd dig out some we've done in the past. Here's one we did for a residential last year.

Last King of Scotland - video clip idea
A couple of weeks ago, I watched the Last King of Scotland. This film is about the life of Idi Amin, the good bits and the bad bits. While watching it, it occurred to me that you could use the start of this film with the 'life after school' session we did. You could also use it to discus choices, and making decisions.
The clip in question is just after the start of the film (50 seconds - 4 mins). Nicholas, the main character, is having a celebration meal with his parents - has just qualified as a Doctor. The trouble is, he is faced with the prospect of joining his fathers practice...something he does not want to do. He wants adventure. In the next scene, Nicholas is in room. He picks up a globe, spins it and closes his eyes. He says "the first place you land, you go" and stops it with his finger....on the second attempt, his finger lands of Uganda...so there what he does...

Developing leaders vs developing followers
Here are some more notes from the seminar by James Lawrence.
We were exploring the issue - is it better to develop leaders or followers? In reality most of us try to develop what he termed to "followers", which in the long run is less effective than developing leaders.
Here's a comparison between developing leaders vs developing followers:
I can recognise some of this in myself - I think where I struggle is "treat people the same". I guess this is because we are so paranoid about favoritism.

Here's a comparison between developing leaders vs developing followers:
Leaders that develop followers | Leaders that develop leaders |
---|---|
Need to be needed | Want to be succeeded (do themselves out of a job) |
Focus on weakness | Focus on strengths |
Develop the bottom 20% | Develop the top 20% |
Treat the people the same for "fairness" sake | Treat people as individuals for impact |
Hoard power | Give power away |
Spend time with others (more socially) | Invest time in others (more focused) |
Grow by addition | Grow by multiplication |
Only impact the people they touch | Impact people beyond their reach |

Crash - video clip ideas
Here are some idea's for clips from Crash:
- Chapter 6 - a father arrives home and goes to see his daughter. She is hiding under her bed....she's frightened about bullets. He responds to her by telling this story about when he was 5....this fairy came into his room and gave him an invisible cloak, a cloak that would protect him. To comfort her, he takes off the invisible cloak and gives it to girl. I used this in this talk on fear.
- Chapter 12 - would you be a hero and put your life on the line? In the scene the police officer decides to put his life on the line even when it look like things are turning from bad to worse.

Team leaders role
I've been going through some of my old notes from various training sessions I've been on. These notes are from a seminar by James Lawrence & Rob White on team work:
There are two fundamental principles on developing people.
1) Everyone can develop other people, you can do this through:
The team leaders role is to:
The leaders must make sure all three of these things happen.
To make these happen, we need to be aware of the "needs" of the "team", "task" and "individual":
The needs of the "individual"
There are two fundamental principles on developing people.
1) Everyone can develop other people, you can do this through:
- affirmation - saying thank you / well done
- encouragement
- Jesus only invested in 12, and within that focused on 3 (and 1 in particular)
- We can't invest the same amount of time in everyone
The team leaders role is to:
- build and maintain the team
- achieve the task
- develop individuals
The leaders must make sure all three of these things happen.
To make these happen, we need to be aware of the "needs" of the "team", "task" and "individual":
The needs of the "individual"
- to be accepted and valued by the leaders
- to be able to contribute to the task
- to know what is expected from them and what is expected from the team
- to be part of the team
- to have clear targets
- to set standards and perform
- to clarify responsibilities
- to achieve / set targets and standards
- to ensure all members contributions are complementary
- to know the leaders style and vision
- to feel a common sense of purpose
- to be supported
- to grow and develop as a unit
- to have a sense of collective achievement
- to have a common identity

Leaflets for display stand....
I noticed this request on the www.youthwork.co.uk message board for leaflets / booklets to put on an information stand - here are my thoughts...
There are lots of other leaflets I've come across, and they mostly seem to concentrate on drugs or sex. I'd like to see someone working on some other issues that seem to be overlooked (at least from a Christian point of view):
Before you set out a load of leaflets for your young people to browse, consider editing what information you should display and when. Some parents might object if you gave them access to certain leaflets - something you need to consider.
- There are some good leaflets at http://www.fpa.org.uk/products/sex_and_relationships_education_publications/
- The Pregnancy / 4girls / 4boys ones are quite good. If you ring them up they should give you some samples.
- There is always ask frank for drugs etc: http://ddshl.broadsystem.com/freeleaflets.aspx
- You might also want to contact your local pregnancy crisis centre (part or care) - http://www.careconfidential.com/
They had various leaflets that we thought were useful. - http://publications.teachernet.gov.uk/ have free some leaflets on truancy - search for Trevor's dilema and Samena's nightmare
- Scripture union also have some resources that you might consider:
They did one called Help - sometimes life hurts but it's no longer listed.
- The home office also have a series of leaflets on various things, ie, making a victim personal statement. Maybe they have something you might want a copy of.
- There is also one called Stop and search - know your rights. See here for details. I'm sure there are other, similar ones out there..somewhere
- speak.org.uk produce a series of postcards that are designed to raise awareness of global issues of injustice.
- mind.org.uk have a series of information sheets about various subjects, such as self harm, depression, grief etc.
- Spring Harvest has produced some brief leaflets called Big issues
- See this post about booklets for those moving from primary to secondary school. Similarly, see this post about Life Actually for those leaving school
- If you are looking for leaflets to help parents, checkout http://www.parentlineplus.org.uk/
- See my post about tracts
- I've not looked into it, but what about some promptional info for people like:

Flags
While I was in Poland, I noticed a shop selling small flags - the kind of things that you'd put on a table to decorate them. They looked something like this, but they were a bit cheaper! It occurred to me that you could use these to prompt prayer - perhaps set out a series of tables, each with a flag some "interesting" facts about that country.
If you can't get hold of the flags, you could just print some out. I notice that wikipedia has a load of them here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gallery_of_flags_by_design
