Risk assessment for residential

We've been working on a risk assessment for a YFC event that kicks off on the 9th June. Those of you who have had to do these before will know that it's useful to solicit other peoples ideas as they might think of something you haven't. Anyway, I thought I'd dig out some we've done in the past. Here's one we did for a residential last year.

Last King of Scotland - video clip idea

A couple of weeks ago, I watched the Last King of Scotland. This film is about the life of Idi Amin, the good bits and the bad bits. While watching it, it occurred to me that you could use the start of this film with the 'life after school' session we did. You could also use it to discus choices, and making decisions.

The clip in question is just after the start of the film (50 seconds - 4 mins). Nicholas, the main character, is having a celebration meal with his parents - has just qualified as a Doctor. The trouble is, he is faced with the prospect of joining his fathers practice...something he does not want to do. He wants adventure. In the next scene, Nicholas is in room. He picks up a globe, spins it and closes his eyes. He says "the first place you land, you go" and stops it with his finger....on the second attempt, his finger lands of Uganda...so there what he does...

Developing leaders vs developing followers

Here are some more notes from the seminar by James Lawrence.

We were exploring the issue - is it better to develop leaders or followers? In reality most of us try to develop what he termed to "followers", which in the long run is less effective than developing leaders.

Here's a comparison between developing leaders vs developing followers:

Leaders that develop followersLeaders that develop leaders
Need to be neededWant to be succeeded (do themselves out of a job)
Focus on weaknessFocus on strengths
Develop the bottom 20%Develop the top 20%
Treat the people the same for "fairness" sakeTreat people as individuals for impact
Hoard powerGive power away
Spend time with others (more socially)Invest time in others (more focused)
Grow by addition Grow by multiplication
Only impact the people they touchImpact people beyond their reach

I can recognise some of this in myself - I think where I struggle is "treat people the same". I guess this is because we are so paranoid about favoritism.

Team leaders role

I've been going through some of my old notes from various training sessions I've been on. These notes are from a seminar by James Lawrence & Rob White on team work:

There are two fundamental principles on developing people.

1) Everyone can develop other people, you can do this through:
2) For the sake of the many, invest in a few

The team leaders role is to:
  1. build and maintain the team
  2. achieve the task
  3. develop individuals
People tend to prefer one of these three roles, ie, we focus on "team", or the "task", or "individuals".
The leaders must make sure all three of these things happen.

To make these happen, we need to be aware of the "needs" of the "team", "task" and "individual":

The needs of the "individual"
The needs of the "task"
The needs of the "team"

Leaflets for display stand....

I noticed this request on the www.youthwork.co.uk message board for leaflets / booklets to put on an information stand - here are my thoughts...
They did one called Help - sometimes life hurts but it's no longer listed.

There are lots of other leaflets I've come across, and they mostly seem to concentrate on drugs or sex. I'd like to see someone working on some other issues that seem to be overlooked (at least from a Christian point of view):
If anybody knows of anything like that, let me know!

Before you set out a load of leaflets for your young people to browse, consider editing what information you should display and when. Some parents might object if you gave them access to certain leaflets - something you need to consider.

Flags

While I was in Poland, I noticed a shop selling small flags - the kind of things that you'd put on a table to decorate them. They looked something like this, but they were a bit cheaper! It occurred to me that you could use these to prompt prayer - perhaps set out a series of tables, each with a flag some "interesting" facts about that country.

If you can't get hold of the flags, you could just print some out. I notice that wikipedia has a load of them here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gallery_of_flags_by_design
