Bend it like Beckham video
Before the month is out each of you have to decide which subjects you would like to take for year 10 and 11
Tonight we are going to talk about how you night make these kind of decisions
We are going to start by watching a clip from Bend it like Beckham
In this film, the main character is an Indian girl called Jess….she is torn between what her family want for her…get married…become a Doctor or solicitor, and what she wants to do…play football…
The clip starts when Jess is pretending to be ill…so she can sneak off to the match…
[Bend it like Beckham]
1 hour 0 mins – Jess is wearing her dressing gown, pretending to be ill
1 hour 18 mins – Jo leaves saying ‘good luck with your studies’
Jess’ dream was to play football…
What is your dream job?
What would it involve?
How would you describe it?
I’d like you to spend a few moments a pick a few words that describe the kind of job that you would like to do…
[Invite each person to explain the words they have chosen]
If we think back to the video clip…
What happened when Jess got her exam results?
Her father told her ‘she could now become a fine Doctor or solicitor’
Why do you think he said that?
How would that make you feel?
What kind of job do you parents want you to have?
What kind of job would they disapprove of?
The Bible tells us that God created us for a reason…
What do you think about that?
If this is true, how might we discover God’s plan for our lives?
Have you thought about what God might want you to do?
There are two things I'd like to suggest:
First…
We should spend quality time talking to God about it…
The Bible tells us that some people would spend hours, days, weeks praying…
For example: the Bible tells us that before Jesus choose his 12 disciples he
Luke 5:12-13 P1012
”…went off to a mountain to pray, and he spent the night praying to God.
The next morning, Jesus called his followers to him and chose twelve of them,
whom he named the apostles…”
Others in the Bible, like Moses, spent weeks…
When was the last time you talked to God about this stuff? Do you?
If you find that hard, maybe you should try something different:
Go to your favourite place…
Try listening, rather than talking…
Read / write
Go a walk etc.
Think about why God has made you the way you are…good bits and bad bits…some people seem to think that God will want you to do something you hate!
Second…
You should get advice…
Proverbs 12:15 P578
”Fools think they are doing right, but the wise listen to advice”
Where do you go when you want advice?
For a bit of 'fun', I thought we'd finish by sharing our thoughts on what job's you think other's in the group would be good at...
[Allow them to speculate on what jobs each of them might be good at]
Psalm 25:4-5
”Lord, tell me your ways. Show me how to live. Guide me in your truth,
and teach me, my God, my saviour. I trust you all day long.”
[Pray]
