Think about how our behaviour effects other people / bullying
Talk Introduction
Tonight we're going to think about the way we treat other people
We'll start by watching a clip from Billy Madison
In this clip Billy has been sent back to school
We're going to see his first day at high school (or what we call secondary
school)
[Billy Madison]
54 mins - he pulls up at the school
59 mins - he lays back smoking
The middle bit
In that clip...Billy was having a hard time
He was picked on, called names and had custard poured over him
How do you think you would feel if you were in his situation?
He could have reacted in many different ways...but he choose to ignore
them...
How would you react if you were him?
What's the best thing to do if you get into this situation?
[Do you think he should have stood up for him self? Why?]
The so-called losers told him to expect more 'wait till they start on the
wedgies...'
The Bible bit
The Bible reminds us that even when people upset us
Romans 12:17-18, 21 "Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the
eyes of everybody. If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at
peace with everyone.... Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with
good".
What do you think that means?
We shouldn't try to get our own back...revenge etc.
Why do you think the Bible says that?
There are lots of practical reasons
Things can get out of hand...if I get you, you get me...I get you...
Ultimately nobody wins
God wants us to spend our time and energy looking for the best in people
and bringing out the best in ourselves
Conclusion
The Bible puts it like this
Ephesians 4:32 "Be kind and loving to each other, and forgive each other just as God
forgave you"
At the end of the video clip, Billy tries to put this into action
Billy saw that there was a better way to treat people
And even though he'd messed things up in the past, he could still change
And that's the same for us
in a moment I'm going to hand out some post-it's
I'd like you to spend a moment and think
Who are the people we need to treat better?
Who do we need to say sorry to?
Write them down, and you want, you can stick them up
